Styles and Conventions of a Music Video

Styles and Conventions of a Music Video

In this blog i will be going though styles and conventions of a music video which will contain , i will also be going though genres which will include stereotypes and i will also be going though techniques which are in most music video's such as effects and also camera shots and angles.

Genres

Music videos vary depending on the genre, for example in a rap styled video you would expect in the music videos to be girls guns bling fast cars and streets. as shown in the music video "Eminem - survival".  in this music video you see things such as graffiti and crime which relates to the conventions in the genre. not just that but they use the conventions to bring out the story behind the song.

On the other hand you could have a pop music video in which you would expect there to be young girls or boys in fashionable clothing and at a sunny location not just that but  mostly have a narrative with love story's and also lot of dancing. for example of a pop music video which has allot of stereotypical pop links would be "One direction - what makes you beautiful" in which this pop music videos has the band performing and dancing in stylish clothing.

Another genre which has some very unique terms in rock music videos, in which you would expect a band performing with a crazy style of clothing with wacky heir in front of a crowd with mosh pits and lots of instruments, and lots of dark colors. an example of a rock music video is "Guns n' roses - sweet child o' mine" in which this music video is in black and white which creates a creepy atmosphere, also the band are wearing crazy clothing with crazy heir styles.

One of the most popular genres is house music in which are very crazy when it comes to music videos, you would mostly expect lots of dancing in night clubs and festivals, lots of lights lasers and neon bright colors with people dressed up in colorful crazy clothing in which some of the dancers tend to be half naked. an example of a house track which has lots of these stereotypes could be "DVBBS & VINAI - Raveology" this music video has an imminence atmosphere, and is set in a was wanting to make you dance as there is allot of lights and other people dancing.

music video styles

Narrative music videos have a story behind them and tend to not show any footage of the band playing, but in which the story is the main concentration, as it keeps the audience occupied and also interested in the story behind the song. for example of a music video could be "Swedish house mafia - greyhound". This track has a narrative story in which is about greyhounds, as it is a house track it is going to be upbeat with fast passed clips. In the video in which in which is based in the future has link in which there are robot dogs and also animated clips, the story is shown though three dogs running in a race to see which one wins, as these three groups are competing. as shown in the video the three people controlling the dogs are the three DJ's which are Swedish house mafia.

Parody music videos are stereo typically made to be a mockery of something else i which is mostly another song or music video. Parody's tend to have different lyrics and also different tittle in which is meant to be funny and in which the music video is meant to be intentionally funny to watch, in which makes it appealing to the audience as it is funny to watch. An example of a parody is Shane's parody of "one direction - story of my life" in this music video Shane over exaggerates and makes the song funny, as he pretends to be a girl. This parody music video is really out of the blue the in which the narrative of the song has been made really funny.

Animated music video's are mainly linked to some kind of art or cartoon, with most animated music videos there are a science fiction or non realistic feel to them. Animation has more of a specific audience as they are more aimed at a younger audience as they are more likely to what cartoons but on the other hand they are a alternative rock band so this music video can also capture that audience. An example for an animated music video is "gorillaz - feel good inc." In which this is a cartoon animated music video in which you can see it is the band which is a cartoon band and in which they are gorillas which is unrealistic. On the other hand the cartoon is based in the a non realistic world.

performance/ concert music videos are the artists playing and performing on the video, in which it is great to see the artist playing as it is a big deal for the audience to see them live and with performance videos you get to see that. you also get to see the expressions of there faces and what they look like and how that play in front of the camera or a event/ festival. An example of Performance/ concert music video is "coldplay - fix" which at the start as the main singer singing in an alley way which shows his facial expressions and his emotions and the you see the hole band playing on a stage in front of the audience, and you see there expressions and the crowds expressions in a was which makes you feel like your there watching them live.

Music Video Conventions

Lyric Interpretation in music videos is where the lyrics in a song/ music video are made to create a comparative to the meaning of the music video in some ways used to create a narrative or any other meaning. using lyric interpretation also means that a music video have more than one meaning or even more open to meaning. An example of lyric interpretation could be Lady Gagas song Telephone, in this case the song has a open meaning as it has its own narrative and also a meaning of Illuminati as there is mention of mind control.

Extension or consolidation of the songs meaning is basically the lyrics which a match up to the images and clips in which toughens the music video to make it have a bigger effect, as in some love songs you get a boy and a girl kissing in which would make it more romantic and would make it have a bigger effect.

Allusion or in other terms referring as where you like/ refer a music video to another subject. a example of Allusion could be from the music video "Love Story" which is made by Taylor Swift in which the music video is referring to "Shakespeare - Romeo and Juliet" as there is two actors which are Taylor Swift and another actor where they play out a love scene/ situation which looks like Romeo and Juliet because it is set in the middle ages.

Links to other artists is where the music video promotes another artist to make them get more popular as for allot of music videos have links, even in parody music video's where they are taking the micky out of a song/ or other music video in which promoted the artist who made the original song or music video to increase the popularity. In the music video "The way i am" which is made by Eminem, he links the music video with Marilyn Manson in which promotes her and so she gets more people looking at her music ect.

Music Video Techniques

Cutting to the beat is where the music video clips are made and edited to go along with the beat of the song (BPM). Most music videos use cutting to the beat as depending of the speed of the track the clips change faster or slower, so if there was an up beat song with a high BPM the the clips would change fast.

Effects is where you add something to a clip, image or sound which makes it more effective and makes it look more creative and professional. An example of effects is in "radiohead - street spirit" where the effects are used to create an abstract feel to the music video, and makes it slow motion and also with an  xray effect to the clips.

Miming and lip sync is where someone is moving their lips or singing over a track which has already been created with lyrics already on there. allot of music videos use lip sync as it is easy to edit with the already made track as it can just be added to the top of the video.

Multi image is the use of one or more images or photos in a music video, they use multi image as they need to cut to the beat, they do this by fading and cutting though the clips and images to give a different perspective or view on something. an example of multi image could be "Eminem - survival" where he uses multi image in this music video to show the view/ meaning of the song as well as linking it to other company's.

Camera shots/ angles and movements are used to create a view on the music video, an example of this "Brennan Heart - Outta My Way" which there is a use of lots of long shots show the stage and the audience as well as medium and close up shots to show the producers and the audience dancing to the music, as such this show that there is bond between the producers which are playing the music and the audience which makes you feel like your watching them live with the audience.

Chroma key also known as green screen is where you is where their is a curtain which you stand in front of which allows to to add a non-existent background which you can change and edit. green screen is used allot in professional music videos such as in "katy Perry - Dark Horse" in which the backgrounds used are based in the history of Egyptians.
